TENCHI O KURAU / DYNASTY WARS (NEC AVENUE / CAPCOM)

SUPER CD-ROM 2 (JAPANESE VERSION)

The very first time I've "heard" about Dynasty Wars was on an AMIGA game magazine, around 1991. Although Dynasty Wars on AMIGA had been totally execrated by that magazine, I've got impressed with some game pics and the gamestyle (lots of battles over horses on Ancient China), and mad to know the original arcade version, created by Capcom in 1989. Sadly, I could only made my dreams come true a few years ago, thanks to Callus emulator, since I've never seen a single Dynasty Wars machine in Belo Horizonte, my hometown.

It was a helluva surprise when I found out that Dynasty Wars had been converted to PC-ENGINE by NEC Avenue in 1994, with its original Japanese title, Tenchi o Kurau! It has always been one of the games I wanted the most, since UNIVERSO PC-ENGINE's official opening. Thanks to Marco Soprani, from Duo Planet Italy (DPI), this dream finally became true...and it worth the waiting!

Of course there are too many features absent on PC-ENGINE version: there's no option for 2 simultaneous players, and no parallax or dual-playfield scrolling. But the game itself is really good and simply slaughter the awful AMIGA version, with a solid gameplay and great PCM voice effects. The musics are neat (though only a few are actually Audio-CD), and the graphics are pretty faithfull to the arcade game.

Tenchi o Kurau could have been better on technical aspects, but it's been a nice shot from NEC Avenue. It's an excellent action game, with some RPG aspects, and will certainly please those who spent some money playing the Capcom original game on arcade houses.
