SPACE FANTASY ZONE  (NEC AVENUE / SEGA)

CD-ROM 2 SYSTEM (JAPANESE VERSION)

Some games are famous not because they're amazing or whatever, but because some incredible stories ocurred during its creation process, stories that become more famous than the games themselves. Space Fantasy Zone is a perfect example of this. The game idea itself is, at least, really curious: a shooter with the main character of Fantasy Zone (great success from SEGA) in a 3D environment, like in Space Harrier (SEGA, again). That's the reason of the name "Space Fantasy Zone", a mix of the names above mentioned.

NEC Avenue started to work hard on the game and, around 1991, the game was finished and ready to be released...when SEGA appears! Since no authorization was given to NEC to use Fantasy Zone image and name, SEGA decided to suit NEC and forbade Space Fantasy Zone to be released. So, unfortunately, Space Fantasy Zone had never been commercially released.

Well, and how did we get this game? Along with some copies NEC might have probably save in stock, the game came as a gift along with a PC-ENGINE japanese magazine, some years ago. Nowadays, looking carefully on the internet, is pretty easy to find sites with Space Fantasy Zone archives (ISO+MP3 or BIN+CUE) to burn your own CDR at home.

Now, the game itself!! :) Space Fantasy Zone is a cool game, with a very smooth animation, a catchy soundtrack and an outstanding playability. It's easy to see that some features are missing (opening sequence without musics, no demos at all), but the game itself is complete and, IMHO, is more attractive than Space Harrier on Hu-Card. OK, some people simply hate the "happy" Fantasy Zone mood (the original from SEGA) but this "joy" feeling fits like a glove on Space Fantasy Zone!

Space Fantasy Zone isn't a masterpiece, but it's interesting enough to keep one playing it for a while. And, to be honest, even if the game was pretty awful, it would be nice to have it, only to tell its "amazing background story" to our children and grandchildren! :)
