ROAD SPIRITS  (PACK-IN-VIDEO / ARC)

CD-ROM 2 SYSTEM (JAPANESE VERSION)

Mediocrity seems to be the fate of some softhouses, since their very first works... Pack-in-Video is a classic example! I won't say that all their games are "cream of the crap", but it's really hard to find an above average game from Pack-in-Video. Road Spirits is, certainly, one of the few that fits into this category.

Road Spirits is a racing game similar to the famous Outrun, in which you can choose among 4 "hot" cars, such as Ferrari F40 and Porsche 911. You must pass through several stages on lots of different countries, like the US, Mexico, Egypt and... Brazil!! :)

Before I start to talk about my own country, let's talk about the game itself. On the positive side, the soundtrack is certainly a highlight, with some really nice tunes. The graphics are OK, a little repetitive, although the movement of the tracks and the cars is well done, with good use of Raster Effects. The gameplay is good, but the game is kinda boring, sometimes. It's fun, indeed, but there's always a feeling of "I miss something here...".

But I have to tell you, guys, I liked this game, maybe because Brazil is well represented in it. For example, among the 10 musics of the game, there's one called "OH! Brazil", a cool pseudo-samba! Brazil is the only country explicitly mentioned on the game. Along with that, Road Spirits is one of the few games in which Brazil is not represented in a stereotyped way, with forests and cipoes widely spread on the screen. Take a look at the picture next to this text, and note that this game shows Brazil in a more realistic way... this has pleased me a lot! I've only been that satisfied before when I was playing "Lotus Esprit Turbo Challenge", on AMIGA, and I realized that, on "Hard" mode, I could play on Belo Horizonte, my hometown! That was really something!!!

...hmmm, let's go further... :)

Finally, Road Spirits is a nice game, but it can't really be compared with the Hu-Card version of Outrun. At least it worths for the whole soundtrack, specialy the pseudo-little-samba! :)
