NEXZR (NAXAT SOFT / INTERSTATE)

SUPER CD-ROM 2 (JAPANESE VERSION)

Sorry if I'm going to say something really weird, but Nexzr is certainly the most "Alestean" game released on PC-ENGINE, perhaps even more "Alestean" than Spriggan! OK, now you can all curse me, maybe I've exaggerated a bit creating such a strange word, but I'm sure I've showed my point! :) Whoever played any Aleste game, specially Aleste 2 (MSX2), knows that few vertical shooters can be compared to the ones from that wonderful series.

Once again, Nexzr is the PC-ENGINE game which gets closer to the spirit of Aleste games. A lot of people don't enjoy the controlling of Nexzr, in which a single button is responsible for all kinds of shots (missiles, bombs, lasers, etc.), but this is not enough reason to blame this inspired shooter, another Naxat Soft masterpiece, this time working together with Interstate (subdivision from Kaneko).

Taking the words from my friend Casimir Decas, Nexzr isn't an impressive game at the first sight, but it becomes incredibly captivating as time goes on. It's technically perfect (real-time scalling, plenty of parallax scrolling), it has simple yet VERY NICE graphics, along with thrilling animated cinemas. Musics are OUTSTANDING, very different from the "rocker" style of Lords of Thunder and Sapphire, and  reminding a lot the best tunes from Super Star Soldier and Soldier Blade. The only negative point about Nexzr is that the game is too damn hard, quite a challenge even for expert players.

To talk about good PC-ENGINE shooters is a redundance, but Nexzr is certainly among the best ones, highly recommended for shooter-maniacs. And, going back to this page initial comment, this is certainly the most "Alestean" PC-ENGINE shooter! :)
