IGA NINDEN GAIOU (NICHIBUTSU)

 SUPER CD-ROM2 SYSTEM (JAPANESE VERSION)

Tales from the ancient Japan have always fascinated people around the world. Ninjas and samurais, with their stylish look and superhuman powers, only helped to increase this fascination even more. The ancient Japan has been well portrayed in great movies (Shichinin no Samurai, Yojimbo), animes (Rurouni Kenshin, Ninja Scroll) and games... in this case, it all started with the classic Shinobi, passing thru strategy (Lords of the Rising Sun, Nobunaga no Yabou) and action games (Kaze Kiri, among others).

Iga Ninden Gaiou takes place in this very same era, but it mixes the feudalism tradition with futuristic high-technology (thereīs no boundaries for imagination... =).   Produced by the famous softhouse Nichibutsu, which created the classic shooter Terra Cresta, Iga Ninden Gaiouīs gamestyle reminds a lot the very first Shinobi. Since I donīt understand the Japanese language, I couldnīt fully get the whole plot, but I can tell you that a girl is kidnapped by the bad guys and you, a powerful and heroic master ninja, should face the most dangerous situations to save her from the gangsters. Pretty basic stuff!! =)

Iga Ninden Gaiou is definitely a weird game. Itīs not a bad one, but itīs also not really exciting; the graphics are outstanding on some areas and very ugly on other places, the same happenning with the musics. Some positive aspects are the bosses (huge, well drawn and well animated) and the later stages, in which the colors have been wisely used. The gameplay is pretty good and straight: all you have to do is jump, run and slice the enemies with your sword, shooting from time to time (yeah, up-to-date ninjas on techno world donīt use shuriken!). You increase your weapon and shieldīs level on each stage, just like on action-RPG games.

You canīt compare Iga Ninden Gaiou with the amazing Kaze Kiri, it wouldnīt be fair. But I have to say that I had a really good time playing this title. Thereīs plenty of action for everybody and... well, a good ninja game is always welcome! =)
