GRADIUS II: GOFERíS AMBITION (KONAMI)

SUPER CD-ROM 2 (JAPANESE VERSION)

Among all memorable game series created by Konami, Gradius is certainly one of the most praised and well-known. Since the creation of first Gradius (Nemesis) for Arcade, MSX1 and NES, almost every videogame system had, at least, one Gradius game.

The same happenned with PC-ENGINE. Konami released three of its most famous games related somehow to Gradius series, on Hu-Card format: Gradius, Salamander and Parodius (the first 8Mbit Hu-Card ever released for PC-ENGINE). All of them were truly amazing, becoming massive hits, and showed that Konami hadn't make a mistake when it's chosen to work on PC-ENGINE, in 1991.

More adapted to PC-ENGINE system, and with its first CD game already released (Snatcher), Konami decided to go a little further, and released on Super CD-ROM2 one of the most incredible arcade Gradius games: Gradius II (or Vulcan Venture, in the US).

Games like Gradius allow the PC-ENGINE to show its real power. Gradius II conversion is simply perfect! Every single impressive graphic detail is untouched on PC-ENGINE version: giant suns, the big fire eagle, the ice cube stage, among others. Gradius II playability is better than in first Gradius, more responsive and dynamic.

Musics and sound effects are awesome, better than ever Gradius music released till then, but there's a strange feeling that thay could be even more impressive. The tunes are still amazing, but the instruments sounds a little bit cheesy, specially when compared with Dracula X music, for example.

Anyway, Gradius II is still a top notch game for the fans. It's not as impressive as Lords of Thunder, but it's a high recommended shooter for any PC-ENGINE game collection.
