EXILE II / EXILE: WICKED PHENOMENON (RIOT - TELENET JAPAN)

SUPER CD-ROM 2 (JAPANESE AND ENGLISH VERSION)

The expression "action-RPG" is commonly used to talk about RPG games with a strong action appealing. The games that fit into this category, like those from XAK and YS series, have a classic RPG format, but with lots of action during the gameplay. Exile, released for CD-ROM 2 System, is different because its RPG side (looks like Final Fantasy) is completely detached from its action sections (Castlevania style).

Exile was formerly released on MSX2, and was named XZR, and soon a sequel was released (XZR II). Exile II, released on PC-ENGINE for Super CD-ROM2, is exactly like XZR II, but incredibly superior on sound and graphics.

Like on every Telenet game, the animated cinemas are great. Well done, with a perfect synchronism between graphics and musics, they give a nice idea of the mission you're about to accomplish. Soundtrack is neat, with some tunes that remind the Middle East, where the game takes place.

Who is not skilled in Japanese language would have some difficulties to use menus, during the game, since items and weapons aren't displayed as icons, but as texts...a little katakana knowledge helps a lot. We, from UNIVERSO PC-ENGINE, had just acquired the English version of Exile II (Exile - Wicked Phenomenon), but its difficulty has been incredibly increased by Working Designs, and the game is almost unfinishable. So, we highly recommend you to choose the Japanese version, which has a superior voice dubbing and a more reasonable level of difficulty! :)

Undoubtely, the action stages are the greatest attractive on Exile II. They really remind Castlevania or Valis a lot, with big and well animated characters. RPG sections are also cool, with simpler graphics yet still well done and catching, but the game would not be so attractive without the action parts.

Exile II is an excellent game. It's not among PC-ENGINE masterpieces like Dracula X or YS Book I&II, but it's certainly an agreable choice for "action-RPG" fans. Recommended.
