DOUBLE DRAGON II (NAXAT SOFT / TECHNOS JAPAN)

SUPER CD-ROM 2 (JAPANESE VERSION)

Double Dragon is certainly one of the greatest arcade games of all-time. Quite an innovative game at its time, Double Dragon was a massive hit on arcade houses. It had been ported to several videogame and computer systems (ZX-Spectrum, NES, MSX, AMIGA, PC and others) and it had also inspired some famous games of the 90's, such as Final Fight and Streets of Rage.

Double Dragon II followed the first game, with more elaborated graphics, but not as appealing as the first Double Dragon. It had also been converted to lots of videogame and computer systems, with an weird feature: some versions were totally different from others! On AMIGA, for example, the game is a near perfect arcade conversion, while the NES version had been completely modified. The PC-ENGINE version was made by Naxat Soft, and became pretty similar to the NES port.

Double Dragon II on PC-ENGINE is a cool game, though it's not a masterpiece. Graphics are well made, the gameplay is awesome, including 2 simultaneous players, and the soundtrack is just outstanding! On the negative side, it would be much better to play a game inspired on the arcade version, not on the NES one (both are nice, but the former is certainly better). Some animated sequences are also a little schizoid, like the one showing Billy and Jimmy Lee suspended by an helicopter...ARGH!!!

Still then, Double Dragon II is an above average game. It certainly worth a try, since beat'n up games are pretty rare on PC-ENGINE... A nice tribute from Naxat Soft to this highly adored game series.
