CREST OF WOLF / RIOT ZONE (HUDSON SOFT / WESTONE)

SUPER CD-ROM 2 (JAPANESE AND ENGLISH VERSION)

Westone is well-known among game fans because it was the team which created one of the most famous and well-succeeded series of all-time: Wonderboy. So, it's pretty curious that one of the very few PC-ENGINE beat'n'up games, Crest of Wolf, had also been created by Westone, working in a totally "not-Wonderboy" style of game.

In Crest of Wolf (or Riot Zone, in the US), you must fight against the frightening JADOH organization, which spreads chaos and terror in New York City. The heros are Hawk, a blond guy with a fast-paced way of fight, and his friend Tony, a huge and heavy punk fella, as strong as a bull.

It's needless to say the plot is far from being original or interesting...but, come on, no-one really cares about the story on a beating game! What really matters is if the game is plenty of action and spanking scenes, and this is something Crest of Wolf definitely has. On the positive side, we can highlight the soundtrack (nice rocking style), the characters design (huge and well detailed) and the gameplay (smooth and responsive).

But there's also the negative side. First, the game is TOO SIMILAR to Final Fight! The New York map looks like a twin side of Metro City map, the stages and the game dynamics also resemble a lot the Capcom game. The background graphics could have certainly been better, as well as the variety of enemies, which are quite repetitive.

Crest of Wolf is a good game, well produced and amusing. It would have been outstanding if not for the few low points above mentioned. Still then, a worthy game, though it's not as cool as Double Dragon II.
