COTTON (SUCCESS / HUDSON SOFT)

SUPER CD-ROM2 (JAPANESE AND ENGLISH VERSION)

It's funny, but I've always had an eerie kind of relation to Cotton. Although I never got to know this game in the arcades, somehow I felt like it has always been "there", an arcade-style game featuring a little witch riding a broomstick. Call it a déja vu ;-)

It wasn't 'til I got to know SNES' "100%Cotton" that I got absolutely delighted with this game.

PC-Engine's Cotton is Success' first conversion of the original arcade game for home use. And they made it a jewel right away. It's a "happy" kind of shooter, but not as crazy and overcoloured as others of the kind. It also picks up a gloomy kind of atmosphere, which fits well the game's fantasy theme.

Joined by little faries - that are part of an intelligent extra weapon system - you get huge end of level bosses like giant pumpkins, bewitched trees and all kinds of other mystical little creatures crossing your flight in this "cute" horizontal fantasy-shooter. The music has some really great atmospherical tunes, and the graphics are quite well drawn. Only the continue scheme is a bit odd, as it makes you start a level all over again on every second continue.

If you like "happy" shooters and you enjoy the fantasy theme, this original first part of the Cotton series will certainly please you. It's not exactly an easy and common game to play, but that's exactly what makes it so special. It's truly a quite unique and amazing fantasy-shooter, that always catches one's interest for some nice hours of gaming time.
