COLOR WARS (COCONUTS JAPAN)

SUPER CD-ROM 2 (JAPANESE VERSION)

The PC-ENGINE is renowned as one of the best consoles ever for action games, shooters and RPGīs. Besides those kind of games, the PCE game library also have great titles in such different styles as Digital Comic, Strategy and Puzzle. Color Wars fits into the latter, but it canīt really be compared to amazing titles like Puyo Puyo, Shanghai II or Columns.

Created by the obscure softhouse Coconuts, Color Wars is based on an original and interesting idea: four players, each one represented by an specific color (yellow, green, blue and red), have to put an sphere on some sticks spread all over the game screen. The main goal is to surround the spheres from your adversaries and change their colors to yours. By the end, the one with more spheres on the sticks wins more credits.

The biggest problem with Color Wars is the lack of rhythm. Even though itīs a pleasant game, Color Wars is extremely lenghty... each stage is completed after four matches, each match lasting something around 10 minutes. At the very first matches, thereīs no problems at all, but as long as time runs, the interest decreases over and over. Besides, musics and sound FX are awful, and the graphics are pretty mediocre.

Color Wars is not a terrible game, but itīs certainly much worse than the puzzle games mentioned at the beginning. Better stay with Puyo Puyo! :)
