SHADOW OF THE BEAST (PSYGNOSIS / DMA DESIGN)

SUPER CD-ROM 2 (ENGLISH VERSION)

While major Japanese softhouses always worked on games for consoles, the European teams usually produced games for computers. AMIGA was certainly the most successful computer within Europe, because of its incredible specs regarding on sound and graphics. An interesting info: AMIGA was released in 1987, just like the PC-ENGINE.

Among the most famous AMIGA games, Shadow of the Beast was certainly one of the most amazing titles. Made by Reflections, a high talented team from mythic Psygnosis, Shadow of the Beast is, even today, a very impressive game on technical aspects. With an astonishing amount of parallax and dual-playfield scrolling, an artistic visual style, giant sprites and an amazing soundtrack, Shadow of the Beast became a truly winner. Its only fault: like most AMIGA games, Shadow of the Beast was pretty impossible to be beaten without cheats. So, a feast for the eyes, but a torture to be played!

In 1992 Psygnosis released Shadow of the Beast for the PC-ENGINE, converted by DMA Design (creators of Lemmings and Blood Money, among others). The PC-ENGINE version is amazing! The CD soundtrack is really something, leaps and bounds over the AMIGA's. Graphics hadn't changed a lot and the scrolling remained almost intact, except on few areas. There are also some little animated sequences, during the game, which are quite impressive. But the best changes made on PC-ENGINE version was related to gameplay. The game is no longer that hard (there are even 2 continues), making it quite enjoyable and, finally, beatable! :)

Shadow of the Beast on the PC-ENGINE is an outstanding title, better than the AMIGA version and a proof that a good game must have more than amazing graphics: solid gameplay is a must.
