BASTED (AIC SPIRITS / NEC AVENUE)

SUPER CD-ROM 2 (JAPANESE VERSION)

Basted is not based on the famous anime Bastard, even though their names are written with the same Katakana symbols. Basted is quite a different game: it looks like an Action-RPG, but itīs much simpler (there are no special items or several weapons, for instance)... it has some riddles to be solved from time to time, just like an RPG game, but what really decides if youīll actually advance throughout the game is your ability on the battle scenes (pure action).

In Basted, you play with the hilarious couple of friends Ryeza and Anita. Despite their friendship, they get along quite often like dogs and cats, specialy after their meeting with the mysterious Kain, protector of the beautiful lady Harani... jealousy spread out all over the place! :) Together, they must fight against the evil Largryme and his followers, who want to control the area once ruled by the murdered relatives of Harani.

The graphics along the game are truly poor, specialy the background images. The musics suit well the game, but are far from being outstanding. The gameplay is simple, with only two Special Options (Save and Look), which helps a lot those who arenīt skilled on Japanese language. The omnipresent animated cinemas in fullscreen are certainly the most attractive feature in Basted. With some dramatic aspects and tons of hilarious sketches, these cinemas alone makes of Basted an interesting title, and show us the true power within a simple PC-ENGINE boosted with a System Card 3.

Even though itīs not a masterpiece, Basted is quite a funny game, easy to play and with some of the funniest cinemas ever made on the PC-ENGINE. Recommended to otakus! :)
