ZERO WING (TOAPLAN / NAXAT SOFT)

CD-ROM 2 SYSTEM (JAPANESE VERSION)

Zero Wing is one of the most famous 2D horizontal shooters. Released by Toaplan in 1989, originally on arcade, Zero Wing was specially attractive because of its awesome soundtrack (Toaplan's trademark) and a nice playability, though it has pretty simple graphics. Zero Wing became a success, and was converted to Megadrive and PC-ENGINE.

Zero Wing's Megadrive version, made by Toaplan itself, its an amazing game, on overall, and its musics are particularly great...but PC-ENGINE's version (Naxat Soft) is simply impecable. Comparing both soundtracks isn't really fair! Although Toaplan had done an awesome job on Megadrive, its musics cannot be truly compared to PC-ENGINE's CD soundtrack, made with the usual brilliance by Naxat Soft.

The main Zero Wing attractives are, undoubtely, its musics and animated cinemas. It's always cool to watch the short animes between each stage, showing the characters feelings. The game itself hasn't changed a lot, with some larger and more coloured sprites than in Megadrive version.

Zero Wing is hard to be reviewed, because it's not a visually attractive game, but it keeps the player in front of screen for hours and hours. And, even if the game wasn't very good (which is not the case), it would worths to have it only as a music CD, since it has one of the best soundtrack ever made for PC-ENGINE.
