XAK III - THE ETERNAL RECURRENCE (MICROCABIN / NEC )

SUPER CD-ROM 2 (JAPANESE VERSION)

Before I start to talk about XAK III itself, I'd like to correct a common but wrong information among XAK fans on MSX: XAK - The Tower of Gazzel and XAK III aren't the same game. The first one is a kind of promo game, released on MSX2 and PC-98 along with the soft Cabin Times, the latter being some kind of Microcabin's catalog, with infos about the company and musics from other games. Tower of Gazzel is a nice action-RPG, with awesome graphics and musics but too short. MSX had no XAK III version, which has only been released on PC-98 and, of course, on PC-ENGINE.

XAK III is a wonderful game, much harder than XAK I&II, since its RPG side is more evident than its action side. Besides, XAK III is longer than XAK I&II together...anyone who decide to play it till the end will certainly face a long journey...I know it, cause I've passed through it all! :)

Some subtle differences between XAK III and its predecessors can be noticed in the musics. Though soundtracks from both games are equally outstanding, XAK I&II sounds like nice pop music, while XAK III's is more symphonic, more solemn. Besides, XAK I&II is a lighter game, with some very comical sketches...XAK III is more adult and morbid, and it can be really shocking in some sequences.

There's only one low point on XAK III, regarding on its graphics. They're excellent, much better than XAK I&II's, but they're so well detailed that become a little confused, in some sections. It's nothing really boring, since most of the scenaries have an astonishing visual. The game dynamics is good, and the variation on graphics and ambients keeps the interest on a high level, all the time.

It's not easy to say which game is better, XAKI&II or XAK III. Each one is brilliant on its very distinctive style. But I can easily say that XAK III is an impecable RPG, even if you don't know the rest of XAK series. It's hard to find a PC-ENGINE game with such a sober looking, extremely well done and with truly remarkable violence sequences.
