VALIS III (LASER SOFT / TELENET JAPAN)

CD-ROM 2 SYSTEM (ENGLISH AND JAPANESE VERSION)

Valis is one of the most famous 2D action game sagas, along with Castlevania. The main character, Yuko, is always involved with Dark World agressors, and uses her Valis sword powers to fight for Earth sovereignity. In spite of being a saga originally created for MSX (Valis I, Valis II), Valis has really become a hit on PC-ENGINE, with Valis II release.

Valis II will always be remembered as one of the first CD games ever released, and it was an amazing thing to see, at that time, its awesome Hi-Fi musics and spoken animated sequences, though it disappoints a bit on playability and game graphics. Valis III was released some months later, and it was really a blast!

It's amazing to see how Laser Soft improves the game at all. Valis II most impressive features, such as animations and musics, are even better on Valis III. Playability is more dynamic, and the game graphics are impecable. With Valis III, it's possible to see the real power the CD-ROM has given to PC-ENGINE. A new aspect in Valis III is that you can play with three different characters, which may be changed throughout the game, at any moment, according to your needs.

Valis III has a big problem: it's damn hard! The game isn't hard all the time, but there are some specific areas that gave me itches of blow up the monitor (or TV-set), or hit the table with my head! Just as an example, there's a stage full of water strains that are themselves pretty boring, since we have to jump over an over with molecular precision! Well, this is really a piece of cake compared to the end of this stage, when you need to freeze your enemies and jump over them, through a massive cloud of shots...THIS IS IMMORAL! Anyway, the game is so damn good that we can even forgive this excessive difficulty, but it's highly advisable to take a break, from time to time, to calm down...otherwise, someone in your family might be killed with no apparent reason! :)

Apart the jokes, Valis III is a magnificent game. Involves the player quite easily, impresses a lot on technical aspects, and could have been an almost perfect game if it wasn't too hard. Still then, a highly recommended game.
