VALIS II (LASER SOFT / TELENET JAPAN)

CD-ROM 2 SYSTEM (ENGLISH VERSION)

Valis II, or Fantasm Soldier II, was one of the most impressive games ever released on MSX2. With tons of well-done animated cinemas and an impecable soundtrack, Valis II is, still, one of the most praised games released for MSX2.

Once Telenet Japan, which created Valis series, was licensed to create games for PC-ENGINE, Valis II conversion wasn't made by a third part: Telenet itself was responsible for that, by one of its divisions, Laser Soft. Looking back to MSX2 excellent game and the delightful X68000 version, it was expected that PC-ENGINE version would be awesome.

It's nice to remember that Valis II was one of the first CD games ever released (a brand new technology), in a time that PC-ENGINE's full power was far to be reached on Hu-Card format. So, Valis II hasn't become as nice as it was expected to be, which is really noticeable comparing it with Valis III, released only an year later by the same Laser Soft, now more skilled on CD games creation.

The game is cool, with many spoken animated cinemas and a neat soundtrack. Perhaps the main problem about Valis II has been its name, since the game is completely different from MSX2 and X68000 versions. Many who had bought Valis II knew the mentioned versions and expect the game was going to be the same, but highly boosted...seeing this was not the case, they got disappointed. Valis II is more similar to the first Valis, released on MSX1, and maybe it might had received this last name on PC-ENGINE.

It can also be noticed a lack of variety on background, and the game is sometimes too damn easy, except the last stage, which is pretty annoying. All of these things don't affect the game itself too much. Valis II is funny, since its continuous action and Megas' immoral acts incite us to quickly pass through all stages and kick Megas ass in the end!! :)

Valis II cannot be compared to Valis III or Dracula X, but it's a nice option for platform game fans.
