SPRIGGAN MARK II (COMPILE / NAXAT SOFT)

SUPER CD-ROM 2 (JAPANESE VERSION)

Compile has always created remarkable shooters throughout the years. On MSX2 (Aleste, Aleste 2), Megadrive / Mega CD (Aleste / Robo Aleste) or SNES (Space Megaforce), its games always had amazing graphics, catching musics and excellent playability. On PC-ENGINE, Compile worked together with Naxat Soft, and their first CD-ROM co-production was the awesome Spriggan, an incredible boosted version of Megadrive's Aleste.

Just as Falcom did with YS III, Compile and Naxat had completely changed the gamestyle on Spriggan Mark II. Using the Super CD-ROM2 high specs, they have created a stunning horizontal shooter that, if not as catchy as the first Spriggan, is really impressive on graphic and technical aspects. With tons of full-screen animated cinemas, Spriggan Mark II was one of the first PC-ENGINE games with outstanding scalling and rotation effects, truly incredible if we remember PC-ENGINE technical specs and the time in which the game was released.

A little weird thing about Spriggan Mark II is its playability. It reminds Forgotten Worlds and Side Arms a lot, games in which you can shoot front and back. Until the player get used to this kind of controlling, is a pain in the ass! Besides, the characters talk all the time during the stages...it's a cool feature, truly dramatic, but it's HIGHLY recommended to turn off the talk mode, on game config. It's really boring to handle music stops each time a character opens his mouth...just in text mode, this is no longer an issue, and the game runs smoothly.

Spriggan Mark II is one of PC-ENGINE most sought-after games, with an average price of US$70,00. And it's easy to understand the reasons, since the game is highly pleasant, has an amazing soundtrack and is technically perfect. On this technical area, among shooters, Spriggan Mark II maybe has only been surpassed by the famous and RARE Sapphire, released in 1995 for Arcade Card...but this is another story.
